Streptococcus Strains
Streptococcus is a genus of non-motile, microaerophilic, gram-positive spherical bacteria that belong to the family Streptococcaceae within the order Lactobacillales. These bacteria divide along a single axis, resulting in pairs or chains that may appear bent or twisted as they grow. Most streptococci are facultative or strict anaerobes and are catalase-negative, distinguishing them from catalase-positive staphylococci.
Streptococcus species are classified based on their hemolytic activity:
Alpha-hemolytic species cause partial oxidation of iron in hemoglobin within red blood cells.
Beta-hemolytic species cause complete lysis of red blood cells.
Gamma-hemolytic species do not cause hemolysis.
Streptococci are commonly found in humans and various animals, where they typically colonize mucosal surfaces in the mouth, intestines, nasal passages, and pharynx. While many streptococcal species are pathogenic, causing diseases such as pink eye, meningitis, bacterial pneumonia, endocarditis, erysipelas, and necrotizing fasciitis, some species are beneficial. Notably, S. lactis, S. cremoris, S. diacetylactis, and S. thermophilus are used in the production of dairy products like cheese and yogurt, with S. thermophilus being the most widely known.
List of Strains
1.Streptococcus thermophillus
-
As a probiotic, S. thermophilus has potential health benefits, including promoting gut health by supporting the balance of beneficial bacteria in the intestines.
-
It is also used in dairy products to enhance lactose digestion, making yogurt easier to digest for people who are lactose intolerant.

2.Streptococcus salivarius
Streptococcus salivarius is a key member of the normal microbial community in the human mouth and upper respiratory tract. While it is typically non-pathogenic, it plays a significant role in maintaining oral health by outcompeting harmful bacteria and producing antimicrobial substances. Some strains are used in probiotic products for oral health, helping to reduce bad breath, prevent sore throats, and improve the overall balance of the oral microbiota.
